Adaptive Recumbent Tricycle
Problem statement
Imagine wanting to enjoy the simple freedom of riding a bike on your own but being unable to steer, brake, or even move forward without another person’s help. For individuals with quadriplegia, this lack of independence often means that an activity they take for granted-riding a bike or trike-becomes impossible to do alone. While adaptive cycles exist, most are designed for users with paraplegia and still require the assistance of another rider, limiting true independence. Our client currently has a trike but must always ride alongside another user, limiting his sense of autonomy. We intend to create a trike that allows him to independently ride, steer, and brake his trike without relying on another rider. Ultimately, our solution will provide him with the independence, freedom, and confidence that come with being able to ride on his own.
