SpaceOceanGate

SpaceOceanGate is a conceptual Europa exploration system that combines a deep-space spacecraft, an ice-penetrating drill, and a subsurface ocean submarine to investigate environments beneath Europa’s ice crust. The design addresses an unusually demanding combination of conditions: a surface temperature near 50 K, approximately 25 km of ice, pressures approaching 100 MPa in the subsurface ocean, high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, and severe launch loads. After reaching Europa, the system drills through roughly 25 km of ice while deploying approximately 28 communication relays to maintain a communications link between the surface and the descending vehicle. Once the drill reaches the ocean, the submarine separates, adjusts its buoyancy using drop weights and thrusters, and travels through the ocean while carrying scientific instruments. The submarine is approximately 2 m long and 0.55 m in diameter, with a nuclear or chemical power concept, redundant thrusters, and a structure designed to withstand extreme pressure. The team performed structural and modal analyses of the submarine skin and frame, optimized reinforcement to reduce stress and mass, and investigated the thermal performance of a nuclear-powered drill capable of melting through the ice over a mission life of approximately ten years. The project integrates mechanical, thermal, structural, and mission-level considerations into a single system for exploring one of the most challenging environments in the solar system.
