Solar Thermal System Repair and Improvement
Problem statement
The Farley Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting ecological sustainability, social justice and peace. It is located in the Town of Springdale, Wisconsin on 43 acres of beautiful farm and wooded land. In the past, a solar thermal hot water system was used to heat the central building. However, it was constructed nearly four decades ago and is now out of commission. This has forced the Farley Center to rely on natural gas for their space heating needs. As an organization that promotes sustainability, the Farley Center is persistent about fixing the system in order to reduce their use of non-renewable energy. Not only will we recommission and improve the solar thermal array, but we will also turn this project into an educational experience for the visitors of the Farley Center. Documenting our research and progress in a manner that both the client and his visitors can understand will promote these types of systems for other scenarios. This will also help the client thoroughly understand the solar heating system, functionality of different components, and its maintenance processes and requirements.
