Problem statement

Disabled individuals deserve equitable access to sport. However, for many, the unavailability of adaptive equipment can be a significant barrier to entry and can prevent experienced athletes from returning to sports they participated in before becoming disabled. Rowing demands both lower body strength and a full range of motion, two indispensable components for success on the water. However, the available solutions are often ill-suited for the task at hand. Traditional walking prostheses don’t have the proper range of motion needed for rowing, and special prostheses designed for weightlifting cannot provide enough ankle mobility to suffice. Our team, with years of experience with prostheses and rowing, hopes to research, design, and create a prosthesis specifically designed for rowing that ensures comfort and athletic abilities.
