Powder Testing System for Additive Manufacturing
Problem statement
Powder bed fusion is the dominant additive manufacturing technology, which can make complex parts that cannot be made by conventional manufacturing processes. The characteristics of the metal powders play a key role in determining the quality of the additively manufactured parts. However, there is no well established tool to characterize the spreadability of the metal powders. My group has conceptualized a testing system to address the problem. The objective of this project is to design, build and test a prototype of the powder testing system. This project will involve the following aspects: machine design, motion control, signal acquisition, image processing, machine learning, and data processing.
