A Portable Seat Lift Device
Problem statement
ME 351 – Portable Seat Lift Device for Geriatrics Studies have shown that socialization improves mental and physical health and can ultimately improve quality and longevity of life [1]. However, for those who are mobility impaired, engaging in public activities and maintaining social connections can be difficult. Without an efficient and simple way to raise from a sitting to standing position, this population is often left refraining from participating in social activities and instead remaining home due to the uncertainty that they will be able to stand up again once they sit down. This is a widespread problem as currently up to 6% of seniors in the U.S. are unable to comfortably move to a standing position when seated [2]. Although there are many products marketed as portable seat lift devices such as the UpEasy [3] and the Pneumatic Seat Assist Lifting Cushion [4], there is a lack of products on the market that are lightweight, compact, and discrete. We intend to create a seat lifting device that is truly portable and easy to use to allow those with limited mobility to be able to attend social activities without a question about if they will be able to stand up from a sitting position, and instead enjoy themselves.
