Sip Happens 2024Automated Mechanical Opening System for Vending Machines

Problem statement

Imagine you’re at an intense matchup between your favorite team and their biggest rival but all of a sudden some of the crowd starts throwing pressurized beverage cans onto the field leading to players and spectators getting injured. This is what could happen in high-energy settings like sporting events if beverage containers aren’t properly depressurized. Currently, this process is performed manually by vendors, which can add significant cost to host venues since they have to pay an employee just to open cans/bottles. Alternative vending methods, such as traditional draft beer systems, are also often too slow to meet the demands of a large crowd and require a bartender. This compounds with the fact that alcoholic containers must be depressurized before they are dispensed to meet Wisconsin state law [1]. MolsonCoors has recognized this and is seeking a solution to automate the depressurization process within a vending machine. Anheuser-Busch InBev has already patented an innovative vending machine tool that safely opens beverage cans before they exit the machine, highlighting a potential avenue [2]. Our solution will aim to reduce operational inefficiencies, maintain safety, and support the high demand for fast beverage service at sporting events, making it a critical upgrade for venue operators.
