Stopping Urban Conflagrations with better Spray Pattern and Nozzle Design for Fire Retardant Dispersion
Problem statement
When wildfires emit embers, they can be carried by the wind over large distances before landing elsewhere and starting additional spot fires. These spot fires are a significant source of residential property destruction from wildfires and are often challenging for fire departments to address while their attention is focused on the main fire front. An existing approach to this problem that has been explored by other companies is attaching a sprinkler system to the exterior of a home and activating it during a wildfire event. [1] While effective at reducing ignition risk, this has not been extensively studied in academic literature and requires large volumes of water, which reduces its feasibility for large-scale community-wide implementation. We plan to characterize the spray behavior of fire-retardant gels to understand their performance at different flow rates, pressures, and in different environmental conditions. The results will enable Wildfighter to design an improved fire suppression system that does not require large quantities of water to effectively protect homes from wildfires.
