Problem statement

The future of the large vehicle industry is electric. Pressures from both the environmental regulations on vehicle emissions and the growth of the electric vehicle market, which is expected to grow 23% between 2019-2025 according to a research team at OMR, are the drivers of this transition. Due to these drivers, automotive companies around the world, such as Tesla and Honda, are introducing lines of electric vehicles in addition to their gas powered counterparts. Following closely behind the automotive industry is the large scale construction equipment industry. According to ConstructionConnect, many companies are introducing large scale electric equipment such as Volvo’s EX2 electric excavator or Wacker Neuson’s electric wheel loaders. To join this shift towards electric vehicles, Caterpillar is looking to convert their CB1.7 compactor from diesel to electric power. The goal of this conversion is to join their competition in the transition towards electric vehicles by creating an electric compactor that rivals the performance of their current diesel compactor.
