Torsion Test Fixture

Problem statement

Automated testing is one of the most important parts of product design and production: • Reduces test times • Eliminates labor intensive processes • Reduces project costs • Eliminates test variables. However, it is also important to gather rich data during the automated test to further understand the entire testing process or to fully understand failure modes. Currently in our Manual Use Lab (MUT), our operators use a Torsion Testing platform that does not gather rich data, therefore, key information falls through the cracks making it difficult to understand failures. It has been proposed to simply buy another “off the shelf” torsion tester that includes more data collection, however, due to the dynamic nature of the company, we feel it would better fit our needs to custom fit one to our application. Moving forward, Milwaukee Tool is looking to make a propriety torsion testing fixture that gathers the rich data that the engineering teams desire, utilize our existing data acquisition software, and can be easily modified in the future. The team will have access to Milwaukee Tool’s Rapid Prototype Departments to machine fixtures and 3D print prototype parts, and they will also be able to tap into the vast knowledge base of the Tool Automation Group to help with any Mechanical or Electrical issues.
