Design a HVAC system for a two-story office

Problem statement

The extreme range of weather in Wisconsin demonstrates the need for an effective heating and cooling system within any building. Nobody wants to be stuck inside somewhere that is 95 degrees in the summer and 15 degrees in the winter. Therefore, it is essential to install a powerful HVAC system to ensure the comfort of the building’s users. Our client, JF Ahern, approached us to help them develop a robust and energy efficient HVAC system to implement in a brand-new, 52,000 square foot office building. There are several different types of HVAC systems with individual intricacies, so there are many important factors to consider in the design process. According to ASHRAE standards, the goal will be to keep the space at around 69F-75F and 20-30% relative humidity in the winter and at around 74F-80F and 50-60% relative humidity in the summer [1]. The building owners strive to be environmentally friendly, so we need to install a system with minimal energy consumption. However, they also need a system that is easy to use and maintain. By the end of the year, we are confident that JF Ahern will have a robust and efficient HVAC system that allows the building users to be comfortable in business casual in the depths of winter and the peak of summer.
