Baja 4WD

Problem statement

The client – the UW Baja SAE team requires a working four wheel drive system and an updated fixed, double reduction gearbox. The annual Baja SAE international competition is transitioning to requiring a four-wheel drive system for all competitors [1]. In addition, there is a shift from Briggs & Stratton 10hp engine to a new Kohler 14 hp engine which is restricted to 9 hp. This will have a significant impact on how the Baja team prepares for and performs at competitions. This change demands an updated gearbox due to the new engine. In addition, the client is also interested in measuring the efficiency of the current belt-drive 4WD system on the car. This will require increased time, materials, and cost, but is necessary if the team wants to uphold its reputation. In conclusion, a robust gearbox and drive system in accordance with the new engine is required to not only manufacture an efficient 4WD car, but also provide innovation for the client. This in turn helps to provide opportunities for engineering students to participate in real-world engineering practice and provides a community for students to be a part of.
